Illiteracy and lack of awareness are some of the reasons behind low condom use in parts of Turkana County. According to Population Services International Kainuk, Lokichar, Lodwar, Kakuma, and Lokichogio are the most affected towns.
An increase in the spread of HIV infections has also been reported in the area with at least 4,300 people already placed on anti-retroviral treatment. The Ministry of Health is now urging residents to access free condoms from health facilities in their locality.
