UAC defrauded of sh28.5m in a procurement scam

Kampala — THE Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) was defrauded of sh28.5m in a procurement scam, MPs on the public accounts committee have learnt.
The money was paid to Southern General Electric and Machinery in 2004 to supply a heavy duty generator and for the construction of the generator house.
The MPs on Monday heard that the house was not built and the generator was never delivered despite the payments.
The UAC director general, David Kihumuro Apuuli, told the MPs that they have called for the arrest of the culprits in vain since 2004.
The committee members, who were reviewing the Auditor General's report of 2008/09, directed the Criminal Investigations Department to investigate the matter and report back in two weeks
