Sunday of Compassion.
The celebration of a Sunday or a month of Compassion is well known in die ecumenical church. Die purpose of the occasion is generally to remind members and congregations about the Lord’s calling to the church to be compassionate and to create opportunities to inform congregations where and how they can become involved in the ministry of compassion.
In the past the different churches in South Africa have arranged Weeks of Compassion that coincided with Pentecost, while others arranged Months of Compassion in August or October.
URCSA celebrates month of Compassion in August with a special service on the last Sunday of the month.
Since 2005 Sunday of Compassion has become a joint project for the family of DR Churches (DRC, URCSA, DRCA and the RCA) and is managed by the United Service and Witness Ministry (General Synod).
The Service and Witness Ministry encourages congregations to participate on either the last Sunday of August or if that is not possible on any other Sunday that fits the congregation’s programme.
The theme for 2008 is: Through God’s care for his church, it becomes a caring church in the world. The United Service and Witness Ministry developed a brochure with guidelines for this Sunday. You can download this in Afrikaans or English:
